Trade needs to step aside and follow the advice of experts rather than purely focussing on marketshare, market dominance and profit. Climate change is depleting arable land, shipping food over great distances rather than focussing on domestic food supply (where possible) and security are also contributing to the food crisis. Then there is the dependance on high cost fertilizer derived from petroleum that needs to be eliminated through sustainable (smaller scale) agricultural practices. Added to the equation is the tragedy of biofuel crops to feed automobiles and subsidized food eports from wealthy nations that prevent poorer countries from developing their own agricultural businesses. These are some of the factors being cited as contributing to the food crisis.
